Smoking risks for expectant mums

Anonymous

WOMEN who smoke during pregnancy nearly triple the risk their children will be born with attention deficit disorder, Danish researchers said. An expectant mother who smokes exposes her foetus to relatively high concentrations of nicotine, which alter receptors for the brain essential for brain development, said doctors from Aarhus University, Copenhagen. The researchers compared the backgrounds of 170 children diagnosed with hyperactive disorders against 3,800 children matched by age. Of those mothers with children born with the disorder, 59 per cent were smokers. The study found expectant mothers who smoked during pregnancy had a nearly three-fold risk of having a child with hyperkinetic disorders, which involves excessive mus- cular activity, inattention and impulsive behaviour including attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder.

CIGARETTE smoking and being exposed to secondhand smoke during pregnancy are equally likely to cause permanent genetic mutations in the foetus, a new report concludes. Dr Stephen G. Grant, an associate professor of environmental and occupational health at the University of Pittsburgh, found that babies born to active smokers, to women who were exposed to secondary smoke during pregnancy and to women who quit smoking when they found out they were pregnant, all had similar and significant increases in gene mutations. A woman who quits smoking when she discovers she is pregnant, Dr Grant said, is more likely to be exposed to second-hand smoke. “She is likely to continue to socialise with friends and family who smoke and to frequent places where others continue to smoke, thinking that exposure to other smokers is not such a big deal,” he said.

Rob Mellor

Do you want to stop smoking easily and quickly? then do take to read this articles slowly. The mind has two parts: the conscious and subconscious. You might want to stop smoking because it’s bad for your health (conscious reason), but you’re still aware that smoking makes you feel good about yourself (subconscious reason).
However there is a proper way to proceed with once you have decided to quit smoking viz.

1. First sit down and write down why you want to quit (the benefits of quitting): live longer, feel better, for your family, save money, smell better, find a mate more easily, etc. You know what’s bad about smoking and you know what you’ll get by quitting. Put it on paper and read it daily.

2. Ask your family and friends to support your decision to quit. Ask them to be completely supportive and non-judgmental. Let them know ahead of time that you will probably be irritable and even irrational while you withdraw from your smoking habit.

3. Set a quit date. Decide what day you will extinguish your cigarettes forever.

4. Talk with your doctor about quitting. Support and guidance from a physician is a proven way to better your chances to quit.

5. Begin an exercise program. Exercise is simply incompatible with smoking. Exercise relieves stress and helps your body recover from years of damage from cigarettes.

6. Do some deep breathing each day for 3 to 5 minutes. Breathe in through your nose very slowly, hold the breath for a few seconds, and exhale very slowly through your mouth.

7. Have your teeth cleaned. Enjoy the way your teeth look and feel and plan to keep them that way.

8. Drink lots of water. Water is good for you anyway, and most people don’t get enough. It will help flush the nicotine and other chemicals out of your body, plus it can help reduce cravings by fulfilling the “oral desires” that you may have.

9. Learn what triggers your desire for a cigarette, such as stress, the end of a meal, arrival at work, entering a bar, etc. Avoid these triggers or if that’s impossible, plan alternative ways to deal with the triggers.

10. Find something to hold in your hand and mouth, to replace cigarettes. You might try an artificial cigarette.

11. Lastly believe in yourself. Believe that you can quit. Think about some of the most difficult things you have done in your life and realize that you have the guts and determination to quit smoking

Ten excuses why people don?t do fitness exercise.

Robbie Cattrick

Here?s a list of reasons that people give to get out of doing fitness exercises. Obviously you are not one of these people and you have put in to action a plan to regularly exercise and keep fit.

1) I am too busy right now, I?ll start next week.

2) I?ve tried exercising for a few days, but I just need a rest for a week, just to get balanced.

3) I haven?t got any suitable clothes at the moment, no shorts or jogging trousers. I?ll buy something next time I?m near a sports shop.

4) I?ll start some serious exercising when I feel fitter. I feel that I am not up to running a circuit at the moment.

5) It?s Christmas at the moment. I want to enjoy the food and festivities. I?ve made it one of my new year?s resolutions to think about doing some exercises.

6) I?ll start exercising just as soon as I have quit smoking.

7) I?ve just gone through a divorce, so now is not a good time for me to start and exercise regime.

8) I?d like to do some exercise in the morning but I don?t have time before I go to work, and I am to tired after work in the evening.

9) I am too embarrassed to let people se me in the gym with my overweight body.

10) I need to wash the car on Saturday morning and then take my wife shopping, so I don?t really have time to do any exercise at the weekend.

If you know of any more excuses please visit my website and send me an email.

What are The Benefits of Past Life Regression?

The belief in reincarnation or a past life is very prevalent in society. Religions also adopt this belief in many cases. The idea that one may have lived before in some ancient time is practically appealing and exiting to most people. Having an interest in finding out when and where this was is perfectly understandable. How many people actually realize that they can use this information to make some big changes in their present life?

It’s hardly surprising really that so few people appreciate the value of Past Life Regression (PLR) when one considers that for most people, the interest they have in their past lives is based purely on curiosity and nothing more.

Not only have numerous studies concluded that Past Life Regression can benefit us by allowing us to learn from past experience, but even now, the scientific world continues exploring the possibilities of PLR as a means of bettering ourselves.

The process involves usually a hypnosis session with a Past Life Regression expert, or it can also be done via self hypnosis. It is also a good idea to include regular affirmations sessions, to prepare the subconscious mind to accept that it is okay to remember your past lives.

It is necessary to accept certain things before you attempt to use Past Life Regression to explore your past lives.

Past life is a part of our present life. The memory of events from previous lives is hidden somewhere in the unconscious that just needs some external help to bring it to life.

You cannot just know about your past life and expect your life to improve. You have to take the necessary steps to put this information to use before it will benefit you.

The past life experiences can be positively used in order to bring about a change in the present life. The mistakes made in the previous lives can be learnt and avoided in the present life.

Some people however, for various reasons find it impossible to believe in reincarnation. However Past Life Regression can be of immense help in either changing your life for good or helping in avoidance of commission of big mistakes in present life even if you think that all the events you remember are merely the results of a fertile imagination.

There are two basic reasons why most experts in the field will advise you to go through with some Past Life Regression, irrespective of what your beliefs may be.

*If you make a positive change in your life due to your experience with Past Life Regression then this is due to the fact that what you experienced was a past life memory.

*Even if you think these events are pure figments of your imagination, the cathartic release you may get from experiencing such thoughts may free-up your mind of something that is blocking your health, success, and creativity.

What are the main benefits one can gain from going through Past Life Regression?

*It helps in healing the past emotional traumas that are wrecking havoc in our present lives.

*We can think more clearly and make better decisions due to this experience.

*If you know what you have done in the past to hurt someone and suffered the consequences you will change this behavior. Remembering the past life where you have done this will make you take a second look at your present behavior.

*It helps in bringing to the fore the hidden talents and skills. There are certain talents you had in the past life that remain obscure in the unconscious mind of the present life. The acknowledgment and bringing out of such talents could change your life for good forever.

*You will have a better understanding of yourself and realize why you do the things you do. You will know why you have a certain personality or characteristic that was a mystery to you before.

Past Life Regression is certainly a win-win proposition for believers and disbelievers. If you want to make a positive change in your present life, it is definitely worth trying!

Getting ready to finally quit smoking

Rob Mellor

So you’ve finally made the decision to quit smoking and this time you mean business. Well if so let me tell you what you need to do to prepare and to keep on the track.

Whether you’re going to stop naturally which I recommend or using medication of some sort. It’s important that you stay focused and plan before you quit smoking.

Why? I hear you ask.

Let me tell you why…

I tried to stop smoking once a few years ago. It was the first time I had tried. I didn’t plan or prepare, I just decided I was going to quit. I believed the hype about patches so I just brought a couple of packs to do me the week and smoked my last cigarettes that night. In my mind it was, ‘I’ll quit from Monday’, I’m sure you’ve all done that even if it wasn’t with stopping smoking. Maybe it was something like ‘I’ll start the diet Monday’ or ‘I join the gym on Monday’. Why’s it always Monday anyway?

Getting back to the story. Monday morning came and I was confident I would succeed. I stuck a patch on and went to work. Through out the day I felt bored and anxious. I carried on for another day but at lunch time I just cracked and had to beg for a cigarette off a work mate.

I only went for a day and a half and this wasn’t down to will power but not planning and preparing myself. I could have planned for the boredom and anxiety making sure I had something to keep me busy. I could have also planned to keep away from other smokers so I couldn’t get a smoke.

Here are a few things you should plan for:

Boredom
Anxiety
Cravings
Been near other smokers
Stress
Drinking

Some of these can easily be overcome. Boredom can be overcome by keeping busy. Stress and Anxiety can be overcome by doing exercise (I found this to help greatly). You also aren’t likely to be near other smokers when exercising. Try and keep out of the pub because when drinking your more likely to have a smoke and you’ll also be around other smokers.

To calm your cravings I recommend you try hypnosis like I did when I finally quit smoking for good.

Quit Smoking: Why People Do Bad Things (even When They Know They Shouldn’t)

Jill Binder

Do you do Bad Things? Even though you know you shouldn’t?

It’s not your fault. It really isn’t. You know you should stop doing it, but no matter how much you know that, and how much you try, you just can’t stop!

Everyone knows how to lose weight. Don’t eat fattening foods. Exercise. Everyone knows how to give up smoking. Don?t light the cigarette. Yet having this knowledge just isn’t enough. Sometimes even having the desire isn’t enough! Time and again I hear about people who get really close to quitting smoking. They can get all the way down to one or two cigarettes a day, but just can’t give up those last two. Many even make it all the way down to zero, but the cravings, oh the cravings! They are wretched, those cravings. Most will go back to smoking within the first few days. They can cut away most of the “stuff” that keeps them glued to the cigarettes, even not be addicted to nicotine anymore(!), but there is just something deep in their core that magnetically pulls them back in, like two lovers who know they are bad for each other but just can’t help themselves.

What is this thing? What is at this core?

Let me take a step back for a moment. How many adults do you know who are happy? I mean really, truly happy? Think that question is foolishness? Let me ask you this. How many people do you know who love their work? I’m talkin’ jump out of bed in the morning, can’t wait to start. Sadly, the percentage is very small. Why is this?

We live in an interesting quick-fix culture. People don’t really have to deal with their issues. We’ve got:
? television
? movies
? shopping
? toys
? and hitting the gym

to distract us and make us feel better. Even more than that, many people’s issues are quite buried. Think of dreams that were squashed when we were young. “An artist? You could never make a living at that! You should be a doctor!” People often forget what their dreams once were.

As a result, I see an awful lot of unhappy, unfulfilled people walking around. They don’t know what is bothering them, they just have that gnawing feeling that there must be more. Advertisers pray on this, selling us more and more bottles and gizmos to give us that ever elusive Happiness.

True inner needs? People either:
? think they’re impossible to fulfill
? are too scared and resigned to fulfill them
? or are so disassociated from those needs that they don’t even know what they would be even if they had to guess!

All those “bad” things — smoking, overeating, gambling, alcohol, the list goes on and on — are easy ways to fill the void. Smokers will be able to relate to this one — if you’ve just had a fight with your family, what do you do? You go for a smoke. Smoking makes it feel like the problem goes away. (I call this the “smokescreen.” Har har!)

I’ll let you in on a little secret–the real reason it’s so hard to quit is not the nicotine. It’s this void-filling. When you quit smoking (or any bad habit), you’re suddenly faced with real life. All those stresses and needs that you’ve been avoiding? There they are, pulling at your coat tails, yelling, “Pay attention to me! Pay attention to me!” If you got in touch with your real inner needs and took baby steps to start fulfilling them, you would actually have little desire for cigarettes. It’s true! I see it happen time and again in my Stop Smoking Coaching practice.

How do you do that, you ask? Here are some baby steps that you can start trying out now:
? Next time, instead of taking that quick fix–stop.
? Have a little quiet time and listen to what your insides have been trying to tell you.
? Try journaling — don’t edit your thoughts, just write.
? Some people find meditation and yoga to be great accesses.
? Try deep breathing.
? Go for a quiet, leisurely walk by yourself.
? Personally, I find it easiest to just start noticing where in life I seem to be avoiding things the most, or if I want something more immediate and active, doing a mindmap (a word drawing) to figure out what I’m really thinking.

For each person, the key to figuring out your needs is different. Play around with it, don’t give up! You’ll be glad you did!

How Stressed-Out Are YOU?

Dr. David L. Thomas

Are you feeling stressed out? Too many things to do, too little time? One more thing added to the To-Do list and you feel like you?ll explode?

Whoa there, no exploding allowed! You can handle it?just listen in.

Listen? To what?

To your self-talk. Not yourself talk, but your SELF-TALK. Listen in to the demands you?re making of your time, but more importantly listen in to how you?re saying them and what you?re saying.

Many of us don?t pay particular attention to what we?re saying to ourselves. We?ve never been taught the importance of how damaging it can be to us nor have we been shown that we can use it to feel much better. You can literally un-stress yourself by using your own self-talk.

Listen in for ?need-, -have-to-, -must-, type statements that you make to yourself.

?First I need to drop the kids off, then I have-to go to the grocery store, then I need to stop at the bank, then I have-to get home and work on those taxes before having to go back out and pick up the kids.?

You?ve just created a lot of demands on yourself. And yes, in order for your life to continue like you want, you would prefer to do all those things exactly as you have envisioned. But you don?t NEED to, HAVE-TO or MUST.

By using demanding statements on yourself, you open up a lot of opportunities to say irrational things to yourself that create stress.

When you use demanding statements, you then create a scenario of ?what-if? in your head. And when the ?what-if?s? back-up, then watch out stress level!

?What if I don?t get it done, what if I don?t get there in time to get the kids, what if this, what if that.? This is when you really go into stress mode!

Asking such open-ended questions is the origin much of your stress. You often answer with ?that would be awful, that would be terrible? which compounds the stressful feelings even more.

Since awful and terrible are labels way beyond bad, (actually labels that are beyond definition) you?ve created a situation in your head that ends up with you saying to yourself ??and I couldn?t stand it if that happened,? or ??I couldn?t stand feeling that way!?

It?s indeed a vicious cycle of thinking that is common to all of us. Fortunately, once you know how, you can think your way out of these situations as quickly as you got in.

So where do you start?

First, flag such have-to, must, need-to statements in your head. Then replace the needs, musts and have-tos with preferences, desires, and wants.

Then when something doesn?t go according to your desires, reduce the awfuls and terribles to simply, bad. Then rest-assure yourself that you can stand it.

What if you don?t make it to the bank? What if you?re late picking up the kids?? Well, it?s not what you wanted, it may indeed even have consequences which may be bad, but in the overall scheme of things it isn?t awful and you CAN stand it.

A great deal of stress is caused from within by this ?I-can?t-stand-it-it is.?

Remember: whenever you hear yourself saying ?need-to, have-to, got-to, etc? replace it with want-to or would like to. Substitute needs with desires; musts with preferences.

And remind yourself that awful things will not happen if your desires are not met. You may not like the results if things don?t go your way, but you can indeed stand the feelings. It may not be good if things don?t fall into place like you want, but the world will continue to spin and you will be able to handle it.

It takes some practice. Don?t expect it to happen for you like magic. Pay attention to your self-talk, listen for the what-if statements, flag the must and need statements. Dispute them with wants and desires. Do it vigorously. With time it will become second nature, and you?ll notice the lack of stress in your life.

YOUR HEALTH RESOLUTIONS FOR A HEALTHY CHINESE NEW YEAR

Theresa

The Year of the Green Wooden Rooster is upon us. At the stroke of midnight on the 9th of February 2005, the Chinese New Year will be celebrated. Since the year of the Rooster is about to commence, wouldn?t it be nice to have some health resolutions for a healthy Chinese New Year?

When you have a never-ending to-do list in today?s fast-paced world, you are becoming busier than ever. Therefore, many other things are dropped down on your priority list. Usually, one of the first ones to drop in the list is health. This should never be the case.

There are a lot of creative ways to help keep you in peak condition. Below are some suggested health resolutions to help you get started:

1.Exercise. Exercise offers so many important benefits that it should always be a part of one?s weekly routine. The benefits of regular exercise include a reduced risk of heart disease, stroke, bowel cancer, breast cancer, osteoporosis, and obesity. In addition to feeling better, regular exercise can help ease stress, anxiety and mild depression.

2.Have a healthy diet. Eat at least five servings of fruits and vegetables daily. A healthy diet helps prevent or reduce the severity of diseases such as heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and can also help reduce the risk of some cancers.

3.Put together a good health care team. This includes a dentist, a nutritionist & a medical doctor to help you keep in shape from head to toe.

4.Get enough sleep. At least six up to eight hours a night will do.

5.Quit smoking and drink alcoholic beverages moderately.

6.Drink at least eight glasses of water everyday. Ever feel sluggish? Based on researches, lack of water is the number one trigger of daytime fatigue.

7.Take time everyday to do something you enjoy. Read, paint/draw, dance, cook, talk to a friend, etc.

8.Feed your soul. People may be healthy physically but the spiritual health should never be forgotten.

As the saying goes, ?prevention is better than cure and health is wealth.? Whether it is Chinese New Year or not, taking good care of your health is an all-year round obligation that should not be taken for granted. Kung Hei Fat Choi!
